Emily Guttman began to focus much of her time conducting Comprehensive DBT, including Individual Therapy, Skills Groups, and Phone Coaching, and discovered that she was not only quite skilled at this work, but enjoyed it very much. She went on to become the head of the largest DBT Program in a community agency in all of Westchester or Fairfield Counties. In this role, Ms. Guttman dramatically expanded the program, provided extensive training and supervision to many clinicians and doctoral students, led DBT Therapist Consultation Teams, oversaw outcome research, and helped dozens of clients to achieve a life worth living. 

​Once she graduated from NYU, Emily Guttman became employed as a psychotherapist at one of the premier community mental health agencies in Westchester County, NY. This provided her with extensive experience working with children, adolescents, adults, and families from varied cultures and socioeconomic backgrounds and allowed her to grow comforta​ble providing services to a wide-range of individuals, from those struggling with a transition/loss to those with severe mental illness. In addition to this clinical experience, Ms. Guttman continued her education by completing in-depth training in several evidence-based therapies including multiple types of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT).

About

In her personal life, Emily Guttman has four young children who are incredibly fun and lovable, but also give her ample opportunity to practice the DBT skills that she teaches! In addition to being a mom, she enjoys socializing with friends, being outdoors, traveling, doing yoga, and listening to live music. 

In addition to Ms. Guttman's education, training, and clinical experience, her personality defines who she is as a therapist. Clients and colleagues describe her as warm, nurturing, genuine, non-judgmental, flexible, down-to-earth, direct, practical, and irreverent. She has a good sense of humor and believes that where appropriate, laughter can be an important part of healing.

After leaving UVa, Ms. Guttman worked for several years in Community Mental Health with individuals who suffered from severe and persistent mental illness. She loved this work and thus went on to study at New York University, earning her Masters Degree in Social Work.

Emily Guttman, LCSW graduated with Honors from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. At UVa, she worked as a research assistant for several large-scale studies in the Psychology Department, including one sited in this news article. Ms. Guttman's research experience influenced her decision to utilize evidence-

based treatments in her psychotherapy practice.
